Outdoor Tap Replumbing

The brief was to make the existing outdoor more usable, without affecting the indoor plumbing.

The existing tap was replaced with a short length of copper plumbing to get the new tap upright and at a more convenient height. The tap was brought forward on a piece of wood so the full thickness of insulation could be installed.

The next step will be to tape up all the joins on the insulation to make it as snug as possible and fit a tap cover.

Useful To Know

• There are 2 thicknesses of pipe insulation commonly available. For pipes at risk of freezing (e.g. in your loft), you need the water bye-law rated one, which is much thicker than the economy grade.
• This sort of pipe insulation (closed cell PE foam) is not suitable for outdoors use - fine in this case as the tap is in an outbuilding.
• An outdoor tap for hose use running from the mains should be fitted with a double check valve. You can get taps with them built in, for little more expense.
